It all comes down to Jesus. He is known as a great teacher and famous religious leader. To some, he is nothing more than a curse word. But everyone would agree: Jesus changed the course of history, and the world we have today is a different place because of Jesus. At ACC, we believe that every human being needs to come to grips with who Jesus is.
So who is this Jesus?
Who does the scripture say that Jesus is?
Moses recorded the prophecy, that the Messiah would be the offspring of a woman and would crush the serpent’s head (Gen 3:15).
Isaiah prophesied that this child would be miraculously born of a virgin (Isa 7:14)
David wrote that the Messiah would be rejected by his own people (Psalm 69:8).
Isaiah spoke of a Messiah that would die as a sacrifice for sin (Isa 53:5-12).
David prophesied and believed that the coming messiah would rise from the dead (Psalm 16:10).
How does Jesus identify himself?
Jesus claimed to be without sin (John 8:46-47).
Jesus claimed to be the only way to God (John 14:6).
Jesus claimed to be able to forgive sins (Luke 5:20-21).
Jesus claimed to give everlasting life (John 11:25).
Jesus claimed that he would die and come back to life (John 10:17).
Why did Jesus say that he had come?
Jesus came to fulfill the prophecies (Matt 5:17).
Jesus came to serve (Mk 10:45).
Jesus came to give his life as a ransom (Matt 20:28).
Jesus came to testify to the truth (John 18:37).
Who did His disciples and subsequent followers say that he was?
Peter said Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (Matt 16:16).
Paul said Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God (Col 1:15) and that Jesus is the one who brings us to God (Col 1:20).
John said that Jesus is the Word of God who became flesh and showed us God’s glory (John 1:14).
Steven said that Jesus was the righteous one and the messiah (Acts 7:52).
And this is not nearly all that could be said about Jesus. The Bible contains much more.
After all of this, you have to deal with the historical evidence of the resurrection. How will you make sense of this?
C.S. Lewis put it this way: Jesus must be one of three things. Liar Lunatic. Or Lord.
Either Jesus is flatly telling lies of his identity, and his disciples made the whole thing up.
Or Jesus is crazy. He was out of his mind when he told his followers who he was. He had delusions of grandeur.
Or Jesus is Lord of all. He is alive and all that His Word says of Him is true.
